A mountain with a bite 😉

The hike begins again in the Forêt de Bonifatu, either at the Maison de Forêt or if you come by bike – at the end of the Piste de Roncu.

Anyone who likes the Corsican high forests is in good hands here. Almost the entire first part in the direction of the Piobbu hut is pleasantly shaded between the trees, some of which are centuries old, up to an altitude of about 1400 m. Once there, you are almost at the Refuge d’Ortu di u Piobbu, where there is also fresh spring water available. The original hut burned down in May 2019, the ruins are still standing, but there are also new accommodation options.

Above the hut it can be quite strenuous in winter, depending on how much snow there is. There are no longer any large trees, only a sparse grove of birches. In February 2023 it was impossible to get through to Monte Corona without snowshoes, so I turned left at the Bocca di Tartagine in the direction of Capu al Dente. The snow was firmer there and hadn’t sunk in quite as much.

The actual summit of the Capu al Dente itself is only for experienced climbers with the appropriate equipment, but even shortly before you will have breath-taking views of Monte Corona and the surrounding Corsican mountains.

If you follow the GPX track on the way back, after crossing the Rau de Melaghia, turn right towards Passerelle. This is only a small detour, but you have fantastic views of the mountains opposite – absolutely recommendable.

Even without climbing the summit, this winter hike was impressive and unforgettable. Unfortunately, the photos can only reflect part of what I have experienced.
