Imposing limestone coast with a view of Sardinia

Located in the very south, high up on the limestone cliffs, this part of Corsica also offers unforgettable impressions. Whether it’s Bonifacio itself, the port with its unique location, the 187 steps of the King of Aragon (Escalier du Roi d’Aragon) cut into the limestone or the unique coastal landscape to the south-east – everything will leave lasting memories.

The city has a very eventful history behind it, not least because of its location. Founded in 828 by the Count of Bonifacio, who also had the imposing citadel built, the city was conquered by Genoese and Turks, besieged by kings and visited by emperors. Napoléon Bonaparte, then a lieutenant colonel, stayed here also for a while.

Until a few years ago you could still go down to the Plage de Sutta Rocca, just below the city. However, the path is now closed, which is a pity. It doesn’t surprise me, however, because limestone was constantly trickling down from above. But it was unforgettable…

The route starts at the Résidence Poisson Rouge (a really nice place to stay) down to Bonifacio and follows the coast towards the south-east. More than 100 m in height are not reached, but in the end, it is about 550 meters in altitude anyway. And there are wonderful sea views across to Sardinia, 12 km away. There is hardly any shade, but there are several ways to get to the sea and cool off in one of the fine sandy bays in the water.

Further along the south-east coast you will come also to two bathing bays with a view of the Lavezzi Islands before you return to the starting point through the backland.
