Traveling in the heart of the island

The walk begins at the car park on the D84, the only road to cross the island in the north. But even the approach with the many curves is definitely worthwhile. From the east you pass an imposing gorge and, in the west, there are wonderful views towards Porto and the west coast.

The path to Lac de Ninu is well marked, a little wider at first, then progressively narrower. In the pine forest on the first part of the trail it is pleasantly cool in summer. Parallel to the Colga stream I pass the abandoned Bergerie de Colga.
Then the path becomes rockier and steeper, but there are wonderful views of the other side of the valley, the Paglia Orba (2525 m) and to the left of it the Capu Tafunatu. There are two short climbing passages that are easy to overcome.

Arrived at Bocca a Stazzona, the view of the Lac de Ninu and the surrounding mountains is overwhelming. The lake is surrounded by lush Pozzi meadows and in the background another mountain range with Monte Rotondo is enthroned. The lake is up to 11 m deep and the Tavignano, the second longest river in Corsica (89 km), has its source here. It flows into the sea at Aléria on the east coast.
If you want, you can go down to the lake and rest, or walk on the left side of the Tavignano along the famous GR20 to the end of the plateau. The descent in the first tour follows the same route as the ascent.

In the second tour variant you have to cross the river and meet the former GR20 on the other side, which then flows back into the current variant. Here, many beautiful views of the Corsican mountains reveal themselves again and again. If you follow the GR20 north for about 8.5 km, you will return to the starting point via a forest path.
